This week for our one of our design assignments, we read the The Vignelli Canon. The examples of Vignelli’s work were examples of modernism and simplicity. There was also use of geometric designs, which goes hand in hand with the fact that him and his wife established their own architecture studio, specializing in the design of household products, office accessories and logos. A clear example of his use of modernism and simplicity is with his design of the New York subway map, as shown below:

I love that although this is created for business uses, it shows a great use of design and art. It’s very visually appealing and also provides important information. I also read that he created the American Airlines logo, and the Knoll logo. I didn’t see actual photos of these included in the article, so I looked them up myself and got some extra details from this website:

I have a similar style of design myself, and I mentioned this in one of week 1 posts. “Less is more” really applies to the work that I looked through above. It can be easy to go overboard with design sometimes, especially with today’s technology. There are so many software options and applications that give you endless options to add colors, symbols, banners, effects, and more. But kind of like how my blog is minimal with the black and white theme, I think it’s a better option to take a step back and work with simple designs. I thought this was a good read that wasn’t too content heavy and I enjoyed looking through the photos of his work.
