For my designblitz, I found objects that I think represent symbols, minimalism, rhythm, and typography. The full album can be found here, but I will also break down the individual photos below.
For symbols, I took a photo of a trail map where we went hiking this past week. I found this map to be a very obvious use of symbols since there are literal symbols used to explain different parts of this sign. I think symbols are used a lot for things like this. Symbols are used in lieu of words to help you identify what something is saying without saying it. Although there is a legend on this map, I think you’d still be able to tell what it’s trying to say with the symbols if it wasn’t spelled out for you.

For minimalism, I took a photo of my counter top that I had recently worked on. Minimalism is doing more with less. I think a lot of modern day designs and home esthetics are minimalistic, and that is the vibe we were going with when doing our counters and cabinets. We chose this marble design because even though it’s got a lot of veining in this specific piece, I would overall classify the “design” of it to be simple.

For rhythm, I used a photo of some flowers that I had. “Rhythm is the repetition or alternation of elements, often with defined intervals between them. Rhythm can create a sense of movement and can establish pattern and texture. There are many different kinds of rhythm, often defined by the feeling it evokes when looking at it.” I think nature is full of rhythm; nature has a lot of balance elements to it as well. I found it very easy to walk outside and take a look around at flowers, trees, grass, etc and see rhythm within them.

For typography, I originally took a photo of my insurance card. But since it had my personal info on it, I googled a copy of their member card instead. Typography is the visual component of the written word. When I dissect my insurance card, I think the size, font, and placement of the company (anthem) gives it the most importance in the space used. This is something a lot of companies do because that’s probably the most important part of the card to them. The member information below is smaller, showing that it isn’t quite as important. And the different colors help identify what info to look at. The black font that lists out the Member ID, group number, etc. are just labels, and the actual customer information is in bold, blue font to make it stand out.
